What is Meant by Head Injury?

Head injury is known as any type of trauma to the scalp, skull, or brain. Head or traumatic injury may be only a minor bump on the skull or an acute brain injury. This type of injury can be either opened (penetrating) or closed. A closed head injury means one received a hard blow to the head from striking an object but the object did not break the skull.

Most Common Causes of Head Injury:

There are some common events causing head injury which are listed below:

1. Falls:
Falling out of bed, slipping in the bath, falling down steps, falling from ladders and related falls are the most common causes of head injury overall, particularly in older adults and young children.

2. Vehicle-related collisions:
Collisions involving cars, motorcycles, or bicycles, and pedestrians involved in such accidents are the common cause of head injury.

3. Violence:
About 20 percent of head injuries are caused by violence, such as gunshot wounds, domestic violence, or child abuse.

4. Sports injuries:
Head injuries may be caused by injuries from several sports including soccer, boxing, football, baseball, lacrosse, skateboarding, hockey, and other high-impact or extreme sports particularly in youth.

5. Explosive blasts and other combat injuries:
Explosive blasts are a common cause of head injury in active-duty military personnel.

Signs and Symptoms of Head Injury:

All the signs and symptoms of head injury are classified into three, those are physical symptoms, sensory symptoms, and cognitive or mental symptoms.

1. Physical Symptoms:
It includes-

  • Damage of cognition for a few seconds to a few minutes,
  • No damage of cognition but a state of being dazed, disoriented, or confused,
  • A headache,
  • Nausea or vomiting,
  • Fatigue or drowsiness,
  • Difficulty in sleeping,
  • Sleeping more than usual,
  • Dizziness or loss of balance.

2. Sensory Symptoms:
It includes-

  • Sensitivity to light or sound,
  • Sensory symptoms i.e. blurred vision, ringing in the ears, and a bad taste in the mouth or changes in the ability to smell.

3. Cognitive or mental symptoms:
It includes-

  • Memory or concentration problems,
  • Mood changes or mood swings,
  • Feeling depressed or anxious.
