What Do You Mean by Nursing?
According to World Health Organization (WHO), nursing is an art and science which is based on skill, knowledge, and attitudes, which aimed at assisting the family, individual, and community in health and illness, to prevent illness, to maintain health, to alleviate biological, physical and psychological pain, to avoid complication and to fulfill self-reliance in meeting daily health needs.
What Do You Mean by Nurse?
According to the International Council of Nurses (ICN), a nurse is a person who has completed a program of basic nursing education and is qualified and authorized in his or her country to provide responsible and competent professional service for the prevention of illness, the promotion of health, the care of sick and rehabilitation.
In another word, a nurse is a highly skilled health care professional who combines the art of caring with the scientific knowledge and skills developed through their education and career.
Liberal meaning of the word nurse as follows-
N- Nobility, Knowledge,
U- Understanding, Usefulness,
R- Responsibility, Regularity,
S- Sympathy, Simplicity,
E- Empathy, Efficiency.
There are some important objectives of nursing which are listed below:
- To prevent illness,
- To restore health,
- To promote health,
- To help the sick person to heal i.e. to assist healing,
- To alleviate suffering,
- To facilitate coping with the disability of death,
- To help the dying patient to pass away with quietude, peace, and dignity,
- To conserve life,
- To give psychological support.
The unique function of the nurse is to assist the individual, sick or well, in the performance of those activities contributing to health or its recovery that he or she would perform unaided if he had the necessary strength will or knowledge and to do this in such a way as to help him gaining independence as rapidly as possible.
The unique function of a nurse also includes the following-
- To give skilled bedside nursing care to the patient,
- To coordinate the activities of all health personnel regarding patient care,
- To conduct a field assessment of patients overall situation,
- To be sure patients are referred to the proper place for service.
