Pediatric Nurse Roles and Responsibilities in Child Health Care:
The role of the pediatric nurse may vary from one health institution to the others, but the basic responsibilities remain the same. It may vary depending upon the educational preparation of the pediatric nurse and exposure to the specialized training.
The characteristics of social behavior of the pediatric nurse as a role model for child care can be summarized as below:
A pediatric nurse should provide preventive, curative, and rehabilitative care in all levels of health services as a therapeutic agent. She acts as a case finder and compassionate skilled caregiver as needed by today’s society. In the hospital, care of sick children, i.e. comfort feeding, breathing, safety, etc. are the basic responsibilities of the pediatric nurse. Health assessment, immunization, primary health care, and referral are basic duties at the community level as a quality care provider.
2. Roles of Pediatric Nurse as a Health Educator:
An important role of the pediatric nurse is to deliver the planned and incidental health teaching and information to the parents, significant others, and children to create awareness about healthy lifestyle and maintenance of health.
Problem-solving approach and necessary guidance in health hazards of children to minimize or to solve the problem and to help the parents and family members for independent decision making in different situations are the essential roles of the pediatric nurse in the present health care delivery system.
A pediatric nurse can do casework, especially for the children, to alleviate social problems related to child health. She can participate in available social services or refer the child and family for necessary social support from the child welfare agencies.
The pediatric nurse should work together and in combination with the other health team members towards better child health care. She should act as a liaison among the members and maintain a good interpersonal relationship.
The pediatric nurse is the manager of pediatric care units in hospitals, clinics, and communities. She should embody the care orderly for a successful outcome with a better prognosis and sound health.
7. Roles of Pediatric Nurse as a Child Care Advocate:
Child advocacy or family advocacy is a basic view of comprehensive family-centered care. A pediatric nurse can assist the child to obtain the best care possible from the particular units as an advocate.
8. Roles of Pediatric Nurse as a Recreationist:
This supportive role of the pediatric nurse is important for the child to adjust to the crisis imposed by illness or hospitalization. She can organize playing facilities for recreation and diversion for the child’s emotional outlet.
9. Roles of Pediatric Nurse as a Nurse Consultant:
The pediatric nurse can act as a consultant to guide the parents and family members to maintain and promote health and prevention of childhood illness.
10. Roles of Pediatric Nurse as a Researcher:
Nursing research is an unabated part of professional nursing. The pediatric nurse should participate in or perform research projects related to child health.
