Peptic Ulcer Disease Definition:

Peptic Ulcer disease refers to open sores in the lining of the stomach or the first part of the small intestine, the duodenum.

Types of Peptic Ulcer Disease:

There are mainly two types of peptic ulcers. Those are-

  1. Gastric Ulcers: it occurs on the lining of the stomach.
  2. Duodenal Ulcers: it occurs in the first part of the small intestine.

But by region or area peptic ulcers are three types and are-

  • Oesophageal Ulcer,
  • Gastric Ulcer,
  • Duodenal Ulcer.

Causes or Reasons for Peptic Ulcer Disease:

The different causes for peptic ulcer are-

  • Infection with Helicobacter pylori (H. Pylori),
  • Use of painkillers called nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Ibuprofen, Aspirin, and Naproxen.
  • Excessive Alcoholism,
  • Smoking,
  • Having radiation treatments,
  • Serious illness.

A rare condition called Zollinger-Ellison syndrome can cause peptic ulcers.

Sign and Symptoms of Peptic Ulcer:

Peptic ulcer has various kinds of signs and symptoms. Those are-

  • Burning pain in the middle or upper stomach. During meals or two hours after a meal or the night,
  • Heartburn,
  • Hunger and an empty feeling in the stomach,
  • Mid nausea and vomiting,
  • Bloating or discomfort.

In severe cases peptic symptoms are such as which are the following:

  • Vomiting of blood,
  • Dark blood stool,
  • Weight loss,
  • Loss of appetite,
  • Severe pain in the mid to upper abdomen.

The symptoms of Gastric Ulcers and Duodenal Ulcers are similar except for when pain occurs:

There are three ways of diagnosing peptic ulcers. Those are-

  1. EGD ( Upper Gastrointestinal Endoscopy)
  2. X-Ray
  3. Stool occult blood test.

Treatment of Peptic Ulcer Diseases:

By following way the treatment of peptic ulcer should be done-

  • Change of lifestyle,
  • Ulcer medications,
  • Antibiotics,
  • Upper Endoscopy (some bleeding points can be stopped through Endoscopy),
  • Surgery,
  • Diet (Bland diet).

Prevention of Peptic Ulcer Diseases:

By following way anyone can be prevented himself/ herself from a peptic ulcer:

  • Do not smoke,
  • Avoid Alcohol,
  • Avoid fried food,
  • Avoid overuse of NSAIDs,
  • Do not overuse Aspirin.

A complication for Peptic Ulcer:

Complications for Peptic Ulcer are-

  • Bleeding,
  • Perforation,
  • Obstruction,
  • Stenosis.

Nursing Intervention for Peptic Ulcer:

The various nursing intervention of peptic ulcer has mentioned in the following-

  1. Check patient vital signs 4 hourly.
  2. Administered prescribed medication.
  3. Encourage patient to stop smoking & alcoholism.
  4. If the patient vomit, check the color of emesis to identify the source of blood.
  5. Place an emesis basin within the patient’s reach.
  6. Offer mouth care after every emesis episode.
  7. Give antiemetic drugs as the doctor ordered.
  8. Give antacids as ordered by a doctor.
  9. Provide six meals a day as order.
  10. Provide bland foods.
  11. Encourage the patient to take plenty of fluid.
  12. Encourage the patient to plenty of rest.
  13. provide psychological support to the patient.
  14. Avoid Aspirin.
  15. Monitoring for any complication.
  16. Monitor the effectiveness of medications and also watch for adverse effects.
