What is Typhoid Fever or Enteric Fever?

These are caused by infections with salmonella typhi and salmonella paratyphi. The organisms gain access to the body through the ingestion of contaminated food, water, and milk. Infected shellfishes are occasionally responsible for an outbreak.  The incubation period of typhoid fever is 7-14 days that of paratyphoid fever is somewhat shorter. Typhoid fever is known as an acute bacterial infection that is characterized by constitutional symptoms like prolonged pyrexia, prostration, and involvement of spleen and lymph nodes. Sign and Symptoms of Typhoid Fever:

  3. The course tends to be milder and shorter than that type of typhoid fever.

Enteric fever is spread in the following way:

  1. Direct fecal-oral spreading or transmission,
  2. By consumption of contaminated food or water,
  3. Spread by an infected person that contains bacteria,
  4. Spread through poor hygiene,
  5. Spreading also occurs through eating raw fruits, vegetables, fertilized by human excreta.
Complications of Typhoid Fever:

  1. Intestinal perforation,
  2. Intestinal hemorrhage,
  3. Cholecystitis,
  4. Myocarditis,
  5. Osteomyelitis,
  6. Thrombophlebitis,
  7. Psychosis,
  8. Urinary retention,
  9. Pneumonia,
  10. Nephritis.

Typhoid fever or enteric fever is caused by Salmonella enteric serotype typhoid bacteria. This type of fever is contracted by the ingestion or diet of contaminated food or water. Diagnosis of typhoid fever is made when Salmonella bacteria are detected with urine, stool, urine, blood cultures. Typhoid fever is treated with antibiotics. Some common symptoms of typhoid fever symptoms are headaches, poor appetite, generalized aches and pains, fever, and lethargy. About 3 to 5 percentages of patients become carriers of the bacteria after the severe sickness.
