Different Types of ICU Patients With Reasons in Hospital
What Does Critically Ill Mean?
Reasons and Types of ICU Patients in Hospital:
Conditions for admitting a patient in the critical care unit of a hospital have represented in the below:
1. Sepsis:
It is a condition that starts with a widespread infection throughout the body and grows into a life-threatening condition. In sepsis, the body’s response to the infection creates a new problem like widespread inflammation that can lead to organ failure.
2. Traumatic Brain Injury:
Traumatic brain injury involves temporary or permanent damage to the brain tissue. Traumatic brain injury is generally the result of a hard impact on the head or face and is often associated with bleeding into the brain and/or swelling of the brain.
3. Shock:
Shock is the slowing of blood flow to the vital organs like the brain, lungs, heart, kidneys, and others. Shock occurs when blood pressure and flow are not strong enough to supply blood to the vital organs.
4. Ruptured Brain Aneurysm or Stroke:
An aneurysm is known as dilation and weakening of the walls of a blood vessel. When an aneurysm in the brain bursts, it causes bleeding into the brain which is known as a subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH).
5. Trauma:
Trauma can take many forms. Most traumas are caused by road accidents or motor vehicle accidents or falls. Fewer people may be the main victim of an assault which may involve stabbing or shooting, blunt objects.
6. Postoperative Intensive Care:
Some patients may require monitoring in the intensive care unit after surgery. There are so many problems that may occur during surgery and those may lead a patient to the intensive care unit (ICU). Some common examples are low blood pressure, unexpected bleeding, and problems with heart rhythm or difficulty with breathing.
7. Cancer-related Intensive Care:
Patients with cancer sometimes require admission to the intensive care unit. While this can occur for several numbers of causes, frequently it happens after a bone marrow transplant or chemotherapy due to bleeding or infection.
8. Heart Failure:
The most common heart problem leading to intensive care unit admission is heart failure. It is a condition where the pumping muscles of the heart become too weak to circulate enough blood around the body. Shock and organ failure may occur.
9. Respiratory (Lunge) Failure:
There are many causes of respiratory failure but the most common cause leading to intensive care unit admission is lung infection or pneumonia. Pneumonia can be caused by infection with bacteria, viruses, or a fungus.
